Season of Change

So those of you who follow my Facebook page and this blog know that I have kind of been MIA for the last week. Just for those of you who may not know, last spring I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Science, along with minors in Psychology, Women & Gender Studies, and Individual and Family Wellness. Needless to say I was pretty busy during my three years of college. Anyways, I had planned since the beginning of college to attend graduate school to become and marriage and family therapist.

I never even gave my plans a second thought because typically anything that I set out to do, I finish wholeheartedly. However, this last weekend after 6 weeks into the grad program I found myself at a breaking point. I no longer was sure if my heart was truly in it, nor was I sure that I really wanted to remain in that profession for the rest of my life. I love so many different things in life that intrigue me, mostly creativity, creating, designing and making tangible items gives me a great sense of pride and satisfaction. I would ultimately love to own my own business where I have the ultimate freedom to express myself. However that dream seems so far from reality right now. Especially at this point when student loans are about to hit me smack in the face and I'm forced to try to find a job that will pay the bills.

It took two days of crying and countless of hours of debating to make this huge leap of faith. I think that although I am now left jobless and without the familiar education environment I was so used to, I made the right choice for me. Though others may think I gave up a huge opportunity and am crazy for it, I can only hope that this decision leads me to find my true passion in life where I can go to work each day and know that I am right where I am supposed to be.

The Worst/Best Outfit in the World

The Worst/Best Outfit in the World
From the time that I started dating Nate (now my fiance), I was thinking about that magical day when he would propose to me. I imagined myself all dressed up, feeling glamorous in some heels and a sleek dress as he knelt down on one knee making all my dreams come true in just a few simple words....

The day after our 5 year anniversary, was like any other ordinary day. Nate and I had plans to go ice skating down in the cities. It had become somewhat of a tradition for us and our friends Alex and Ashley to go down each winter and spend the evening skating. Unfortunately, they had called earlier in the day and had told us that they wouldn't be able to come. I was so disappointed, but little did I know that all was going according to plan....

Before we headed down, Nate drove into our hometown bowling alley where where we incidentally had our first date back when we first met in 9th/10th grade. (Omg, looking back at photos, we look like such babies!)

Anyways, I didn't think much of it as Nate can be spontaneous like that. So after beating him once again (with an amazing score of 105 to 103 ;) we headed down to the cities to go ice skating at our favorite rink. With its lighted trees and bridges, it's a beautiful sight at night.
Now, I need not remind you that this is a Minnesota winter day....wind chill and subzero temperatures never hold us Minnesotan's down!!! We just have to sacrifice beauty in order to stay outside longer than 30 seconds, hence my lovely outfit consisted of baggy snow pants, an over-sized snowmobile jacket, and a thick knitted scarf wrapped around my neck a million times. (of course I would forget my hat at home!)

After skating for a while, Nate tried to coax me into going to a certain part of the pond. Me being me, was being difficult and would not go and skated away. Little did I know that I had just ruined his plan.
I finally agreed to go around the pond on more time and as we approached one of the lighted bridges, Nate slowed me down and said, “We started out the day how our relationship started and now I want to end the day with how I want the spend the rest of my life.” With that he skated towards me and slid down on one knee while pulling out a ring box from the inside of his jacket and asked, “Will you marry me?” After a pause of about 30 seconds and a few "Are you serious???", I finally was able to squeak out a, “Yes!” I had totally forgotten about everything else, but the fact that the man who I loved most in the whole wide world just asked me to spend my entire life with him, baggy snow pants and all!

Little did I know that the proposal was not the only thing that Nate had planned for the night. After we finished up skating we headed over to Maynard's restaurant to eat. When we arrived, I was greeted by our supposedly MIA friends, Alex and Ashley, who presented me with a frame with a picture of the proposal! Nate had organized for them to be there all along without my knowing. They had hidden in the bushes alongside the pond waiting to take a photo of the proposal and to capture the special moment right when it happened. They also happened to catch the whole thing on video too!

I am so excited to start my new life with Nate and am so thankful for the best friends and family a girl could ask for. I know that I have found the perfect man for me....one that appreciates me even when I resemble the Michelin Man. :)

E.L.F Dollar Deals

For those of you who may not be familiar with E.l.f (eyes, lips, face) Cosmetics you have to check it out!!! Years ago when I was a freshman in college and dirt poor, this makeup became my holy grail of makeup products. Why? Because tons of E.l.f products are only $1!!! How much cheaper can you get than that??
Just with any makeup brand though, I have come across hits and misses. I will share with you some of my favorite E.l.f  products that you may want to try out for yourself. They are so cheap, what do you have to lose? E.l.f does also have some "higher" quality mineral makeup that is in their studio and mineral makeup lines and those run anywhere from $3-$6.

Originally E.l.f was an exclusively online shop, however in recent years they have branched out and are supplied in some well known stores such as Target and Kmart. I have also seen E.l.f products in Gordman's and some dollar stores. I typically get my E.l.f products from Target because they have the biggest selection and then I don't have to wait for shipping like I would if I bought them online.....I'm kind of impatient when it comes to waiting for things to arrive by mail. What can I say, I'm just way to excited to get home and try my new makeup out!

One of my all time favorite products from E.l.f. is their waterproof eyeliner pen- $1. I absolutely love love love this product! Although, I have a hard time agreeing that any product can ever truly be "waterproof", I have never had any problems with this eyeliner smudging or draining down my face during the day (and I have super oily skin that is certainly prone to do that with eyeliner!!) Because it is in a pen format, it is super easy to make an accurate line and to wing out your eyeliner to add some drama to your makeup look.

I also love their eyeshadow quads- $1. I have tried the quads Butternut, Drama, Nouveau Neutrals, and Day 2 Night. They all had highly pigmented colors that allowed you to achieve both dramatic looks for going out at night or subtle daytime looks. Personally, my favorite quad was Day 2 Night which is a gorgeous quad with cream white, shimmery brown, cranberry, and charcoal grey colors. I'm even using the Day 2 Night quad on my cousin for her wedding day! She just loved the romantic, effortless, beautiful look it gave.

Finally, one of my other all time favorite e.l.f. products is their false eyelashes! I absolutely love their Natural Lash Kit- $1. I have tried other brands of false eyelashes and I just feel that these are the most comfortable on my eye. Even though they are their more "natural" false eyelashes, they still give you a very full and glamorous look that can be used both day and night. The only con I would have to say about this product is the glue that comes with it. DO NOT COUNT ON USING THIS GLUE!!! I have tried working with this glue and it is terrible. The lashes will  not stay on. I recommend using DUO Eyelash Adhesive which works amazingly and I have never had a problem with my lashes coming off with this glue. You can find DUO eyelash glue at Target for about $6 and it doesn't look like much, but it will last you FOREVER!

There are so many more E.l.f products that I love that I just don't have room to write about them all. However, listed below are some of my other loved E.l.f products. If you have any questions about any of them feel free to ask me or you can go to the E.l.f website at: http://www.eyeslipsface.com/ to check out the reviews on the products. They are always having deals on their website for free shipping or half off your order so keep your eyes open for the best deal and happy shopping!!

Oh the Wonders of Chafing Gel!!

I can imagine when some see into my makeup box, they quietly think to themselves...."Why in the world does she have Monistat Chafing Gel in there???" And then they have a silent look of horror as I begin to apply it to my face. However what they don't know is that I have discovered one of beauty's hidden secrets...finally an incredible and affordable face primer available in almost any drugstore!

For those who may not know, the purpose of a face primer is to...
  • create a smooth canvas on your skin to allow makeup to apply more evenly
  • fill in pores and fine lines on your face
  • helps prolong makeup wear by creating a sort of barrier from the oils of your skin
  • moisturizes skin
Also for those that don't know, face primers work wonders, but doesn't do wonders on your checkbook. Good face primers like Smashbox Photo Finish Primer can run you about  $36 for only 1oz at your local Ulta! That just seems outrageous to a thrifty girl like me so hence, here comes the chafing gel!!

Face primers contain the ingredient Dimethicone which is essentially a skin softener. Surprise, surprise, Monistate Chafing Gel's active ingredient is Dimethicone!! Essentially, most of the main ingredients are the same for both...take a look for yourself!

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer- 1oz- $36
       Ingredients:
Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Trisiloxane, Silica, Dimethicone/ Vinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Extract, Propylene Glycol, Water (Aqua, Eau), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cola Acuminata Seed Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract.

Monistat Chafing Gel- 1.5oz- $6
       Ingredients:
Active: Dimethicone 1.2%. Inactive: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Tocopheryl Acetate, Trisiloxane.

So essentially it is up to what you what you want to use, but for this girl it's gonna be chafing gel all the way!!!

Manicures for Pennies

If your like me, having dingy, unpolished nails really makes me feel sloppy and unprofessional. Also, if you are like me, you can't afford to spend a fortune on going to the nail salon every few weeks to fill in your acrylics. Fortunately, I have discovered a way to satisfy my nail obsession without spending a fortune, in fact it only costs me about about $3!

Walmart, Target, and drugs stores such as Walgreen's usually all carry acrylic glue on nails which is an alternative to the acrylics you can get in a nail salon. Some may turn up their nose because they think that these are "cheap" and are prone to falling off. However, I tend to like the freedoms that I get with these glue on nails and have found a way to prevent them from falling off prematurely.

Reasons why I love glue on nails:
  1. I am able to paint them and  design them in whatever way I want
  2. Cheap and Affordable
  3. Look more natural than acrylics
  4. Able to change more frequently
  5. Gentler on nails
You can find acrylic glue on nails pretty much anywhere now although Walmart and Target are probably the cheapest you can find in store for about $6-8 for about 100 nails. However, if you head on over to http://www.ebay.com/ you can find sellers from China selling sets of 500 nails for about $2.50-$3. Though you may have to wait a few weeks before they arrive at your door, the nails are of equal quality of those you can find at Target, Walmart, or Sally's Beauty Supply. The Nails come in 10 different sizes (50 of each size) so you are sure to find ones that fit your nails perfectly.

Steps for your perfect pedicure:

   Materials:
  1. Poster Putty
  2. 2 Pens
  3. Small Scissors
  4. Acrylic Nails
  5. Original Super-Glue
  6. Nail Polish
  • Once you pick out the sizes that fit your nails, trim them down to the desired length with a small precision scissors and clip the sharp edges off.
  • Then take two pens or pencils and cover them with poster putty and press down one hand of nails into the putty on one pen and the other five onto the other. That way they will stay in place for you to paint them and make designs if you wish. (paint them as if they were your own nails with a color and make sure you use a clear topcoat on top)

  •  After you paint the nails and are waiting for them to dry, you can prep your nails by using an acetone   nail polish remover to clean off any old nail polish and natural oils off your nails (Doing this will help adhere the nails better) Also, push back your cuticles if needed.
  • Next take a nail file and rough up the entire nail bed (doing this will give the glue something to stick and grab onto)
  • Finally, when your nails are dried remove them from the putty and apply a thin layer of super-glue (yes, super-glue!) to the back of the acrylic nail and apply it to your nail being careful to get it in the right position and angle and press the nail down, holding for about 10 seconds or more.
    • Why I like using super-glue over traditional nail glue
      • Super-glue actually has the same active ingredient that "nail glues" have only at a higher amount making it have WAY more sticking power to your nails. You no longer have to worry about glue on nails falling off randomly! Yippie!

  • Repeat for all nails (don't be scared if a little glue gets on your skin, after a few hand washes or a shower, it will come off)
  • TADA!!! You are done and now have a fabulous, affordable manicure!
Practice Makes Perfect
-Your first set of nails may not be perfect, but keep at it and you will be asked where you are getting your nails done at!

Removing Your Glue on Nails
  • I personally wear my glue on nails until I want to switch them which ends up being about 2 weeks. However, if you would like to remove them I would recommend soaking the nails in an acetone nail polish remover in order to loosen up the glue that is binding them.
 Extras
  • if you end up loving your acrylic nails, Ebay has all sorts of nail gems and design tools for sale that can all be used on your acrylic nails to make your nails look even more high class, all for an affordable price!
  • Here are some examples of previous designs I have done on my nails. You can also see more of my nails designs on my Pinterest at: http://pinterest.com/LLScarves/custom-nails-by-hkw-nails/
